The Bible speaks of TWO identifications;
"The Mark of the Beast" AND "The Seal of God."
Please pay attention to all words; they are the key to understanding the meaning of both. If you hope to hear the shortcut answer, "It's a chip" or "a cross," then you have already missed the point.
Revelation 13:16-18
"He required everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to be given a MARK ON THE RIGHT HAND OR ON THE FOREHEAD. And no one could buy or sell anything without that mark, which was either the name of the beast or the number representing his name. Wisdom is needed here. Let the one with understanding solve the meaning of the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is 666."
The number 666 comes from Satan, the father of sin.
Those who live in SIN belong to Satan. Therefore, the number of a man also belongs to every man and woman whose Sinful Nature is alive and active (has not been crucified); they never repented. It's not asking people whether they "agreed" to it or not; it's a function we are all born with.
Matthew 6:24 "No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money."
Only those who are enslaved to money will be able to buy and sell because they belong to Satan and bear his mark; by default
To refuse the Mark of the Beast is to REJECT SATAN AND REPENT; only then can we serve God and be free from money
1 John 3:8
"BUT WHEN PEOPLE KEEP ON SINNING, IT SHOWS THAT THEY BELONG TO THE DEVIL, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil."
No one can say they "repented" or are "born again" when they keep sinning; it never happened. The sinful nature has never been put to death. Those who truly repented and then denied the Holy Spirit have no more option for repentance.
Genuine Repentance only happens ONCE; it successfully KILLS the sinful nature, so the person cannot sin again. Jesus did not "survive" the crucifixion; He DIED on the cross and then rose to Life in Spirit after 3 days. He was not crucified again.
REPENTANCE IS THE MEANING OF "THE CROSS." If anyone keeps sinning and must confess repeatedly, they never truly repented, have never been forgiven, and still belong to Satan because their sinful nature never "died on the cross" and was never transformed into the Life in Spirit. They never received the Holy Spirit to prove that they repented and belonged to God. The repeated sin proves that they still belong to the Devil.
This is a Spiritual concept; thinking of the cross in a physical way won't bring the correct understanding; it's a symbol (although the event did take place in the physical world).
Egypt
It is an interchangeable term with two meanings;
Physical; an evil/pagan country that enslaved people of God
Spiritual; living in Sin and belonging to Satan and/or being under the rule of Satan (no matter where we live). Examples;
Matthew 2:13-15 "After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! Flee TO Egypt with the child and his mother,” the angel said. “Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother, and they stayed there until Herod’s death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “I called my Son out of Egypt.” (meaning; they were led out from under the rule of Herod, who was serving Satan, that is why he wanted to kill baby Jesus)
Revelation 11:8 "And their bodies will lie in the main street of Jerusalem, the city that is figuratively called “Sodom” and “Egypt,” the city where their Lord was crucified."
Of course, Jerusalem is also a Holy place, so the term Egypt is used here to describe the wickedness happening there. Name Sodom is used to portray wickedness and its fate - destruction.
The Meaning of the Mark 666
The meaning of the Mark of the Beast was given to people who were freed from the slavery of Egypt in the times of Moses, who mediated the 10 Commandments between God and people. The people followed Moses and the law, not Jesus Christ.
The Passover
Exodus 13:8-10
“On the seventh day you must explain to your children, ‘I am celebrating what the Lord did for me when I left Egypt.’ This ANNUAL FESTIVAL WILL BE A VISIBLE SIGN to you, LIKE A MARK BRANDED ON YOUR HAND OR YOUR FOREHEAD. Let it remind you always to recite this teaching of the Lord: ‘With a strong hand, the Lord rescued you from Egypt.’ So observe the decree of this festival at the appointed time each year."
Exodus 13:14-16
“And in the future, your children will ask you, ‘What does all this mean?’ Then you will tell them, ‘With the power of his mighty hand, the Lord brought us out of Egypt, the place of our slavery. Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, so the Lord killed all the firstborn males throughout the land of Egypt, both people and animals.
Isaiah 43:4 "For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I gave Egypt as a ransom for your freedom; I gave Ethiopia and Seba in your place. "Others were given in exchange for you. I traded their lives for yours because you are precious to me. You are honored, and I love you."
God sent an angel of death to kill all firstborn male humans and animals in all of Egypt as a price for freeing people because Pharaoh would not let them go otherwise (even though God gave him many chances to do it. Pharoah refused and it was the last resort). God has used this sacrificial event as a Remembrance of what He did to free them.
That is why I now sacrifice all the firstborn males to the Lord—except that the firstborn sons are always bought back.’ THIS CEREMONY WILL BE LIKE A MARK BRANDED ON YOUR HAND AND YOUR FOREHEAD. It is a reminder that the power of the Lord’s mighty hand brought us out of Egypt.”
Since the firstborn sons are always bought back and not killed, it leaves the sacrifice of animals only - as an ANNUAL SACRIFICE FOR THEIR SINS (repeated confession)
Even though THE CEREMONY honors God for what He has done for them, the freed sinners did not Honor God.
They disobeyed and cried to return to Egypt or die instead of serving God! God destroyed all who were over the age of 20 in the wilderness, as they wished.
(Check my post "Out of Egypt. What went wrong?")
This also serves as a reminder and a warning to future generations who choose "Egypt" over God. Egypt in a spiritual meaning; living in sin, serving Satan, and never repenting. This includes bowing down to the beast; it's done by belonging to Satan and not necessarily getting on your knees. Physical reality is only an illusion; anything can be faked to make it seem "real."
THE MARK OF THE BEAST WAS A SIGN THAT THE SINFUL NATURE WAS STILL ALIVE AND ANIMAL SACRIFICE NEEDED ANNUAL REPETITION; (repeated confession!)
THEIR HEARTS WERE UNCHANGED, UNREPENTED, AND DID NOT RISE TO LIFE.
Jude 1:5
"So I want to remind you, though you already know these things, that Jesus first rescued the nation of Israel from Egypt, but later he destroyed those who did not remain faithful."
Their loyalty was to Egypt; Satan
Galatians 4:10-12
"You are trying to earn favor with God by observing certain days or months or seasons or years. I fear for you. Perhaps all my hard work with you was for nothing. Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to live as I do in freedom from these things, for I have become like you Gentiles—free from those laws."
Paul didn't mean to "disobey" the law but TO LET Jesus Christ set us free from it by Repenting (change of heart)
Galatians 5:1 "So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law."
The Festival of Unleavened Bread
Yeast is a symbol of Sin; it spreads like a virus.
Exodus 23:15
"First, celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days the bread you eat must be made WITHOUT YEAST, just as I commanded you. Celebrate this festival annually at the appointed time in early spring, in the month of Abib, for that is the anniversary of your departure from Egypt. No one may appear before me without an offering."
This celebration was also violated;
Amos 4:4-5 “Go ahead and offer sacrifices to the idols at Bethel. Keep on disobeying at Gilgal. Offer sacrifices each morning, and bring your tithes every three days. Present your bread made WITH YEAST as an offering of thanksgiving. Then give your extra voluntary offerings so you can brag about it everywhere! This is the kind of thing you Israelites love to do,” says the Sovereign Lord."
Matthew 13:33 "Jesus also used this illustration: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.”
Isaiah 64:6-7 “You welcome those who gladly do good, who follow godly ways. But you have been very angry with us, for we are not godly. We are constant sinners; how can people like us be saved? We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind. Yet no one calls on your name or pleads with you for mercy. Therefore, you have turned away from us and turned us over to our sins.”
turned over to Satan
1 Corinthians 5:7-8
"Get rid of the old “yeast” by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made WITHOUT YEAST, which is what you really are. CHRIST, OUR PASSOVER LAMB, HAS BEEN SACRIFICED FOR US. So let us celebrate the festival, not with the old bread of wickedness and evil, but with the new BREAD OF SINCERITY AND TRUTH."
This festival is Spiritual and has nothing to do with the bakery
John 6:35
"Jesus replied, “I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."
John 6:51 "I am the LIVING BREAD that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, IS MY FLESH.”
Jesus Christ sacrificed His flesh/body on the Cross; to make a way of setting sinners free from slavery. Animal sacrifice isn't enough to take sins away
THE LIVING BREAD = THE SACRIFICE OF JESUS CHRIST; "eating it" means Repentance and life in the Holy Spirit; without Sin (without yeast)
Matthew 26:26-28
"As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.”
And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many."
Hebrews 9:15 “That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that ALL WHO ARE CALLED can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.”
Hebrews 8:13 “When God speaks of a “new” covenant, it means he has made the first one obsolete. It is now out of date and will soon disappear.”
God never broke the covenant with Abraham; only the law followers broke it; by disobeying. They couldn't keep it because of a lack of Faith. They are dead branches that are cut off from the "special" olive tree, whose Abraham is the root of. The "new" covenant is based on Faith; that Abraham displayed; that's why he was able to obey. Turning to Jesus Christ in repentance is compared to a wild olive tree branch grafted into the original olive tree. That's why whoever repents and receives the Holy Spirit is called "an adopted child of God."
Romans 8:15 “So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”
Romans 11:16 “And since Abraham and the other patriarchs were holy, their descendants will also be holy—just as the entire batch of dough is holy because the portion given as an offering is holy. For if the roots of the tree are holy, the branches will be, too.”
Romans 11:23 “And if the people of Israel turn from their unbelief, they will be grafted in again, for God has the power to graft them back into the tree.”
Isaiah 1:11-14
“What makes you think I want all your sacrifices?” says the Lord. “I am sick of your burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fattened cattle. I get no pleasure from the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.
When you come to worship me, who asked you to parade through my courts with all your ceremony?
Stop bringing me your meaningless gifts; the incense of your offerings disgusts me! As for your celebrations of the new moon and the Sabbath and your special days for fasting—they are all sinful and false. I want no more of your pious meetings. I hate your new moon celebrations and your annual festivals. They are a burden to me. I cannot stand them!" When you lift up your hands in prayer, I will not look. Though you offer many prayers, I will not listen, for your hands are covered with the blood of innocent victims.
Micah 6:6-8 “What can we bring to the Lord? Should we bring him burnt offerings? Should we bow before God Most High with offerings of yearling calves? Should we offer him thousands of rams and ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Should we sacrifice our firstborn children to pay for our sins? No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”
Wash yourselves and be clean! Get your sins out of my sight. Give up your evil ways. Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows. “Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool. If you will ONLY OBEY ME, you will have plenty to eat. But if you turn away and refuse to listen, you will be devoured by the sword of your enemies. I, the Lord, have spoken!”
THIS IS A CALL FOR REPENTANCE! and LOYALTY!
"you will have plenty to eat" - you won't have to slave to Satan to earn money to be fed! God will feed you!
Joel 2:13
"Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.”
Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate,
slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.
He is eager to relent and not punish."
The Law of Moses
The law of Moses was given to people TO CONVICT THEM of their sins; SO THAT THEY WOULD REPENT.
I have explained the concept of law in more detail and through plenty of scripture in my posts; Born Again, Faith, the Things Unseen,
In a nutshell;
The law itself is Holy, and the Holy people cannot break it because holiness is their nature, so they don't need it. Their holy nature fulfills it (It's like bringing sand to the beach - unnecessary)
The law is for the sinners, and it serves as their guardian. However, their sinful nature makes them break it because sinful nature is evil, and the law is Holy - the opposite forces (it's like expecting an elephant to fly - it won't happen)
Jesus Christ frees from the law sinners who: repent, crucify their sinful nature (their wickedness), and receive His Holy Spirit because of their Faith in Him. They follow Him instead of the law because He makes them Holy; so they no longer need the law (see point 1)
Jesus Christ is the only way to God, so it's a REQUIREMENT TO BE FREED FROM THE LAW by Faith and Repentance! Jesus never followed the Law because he was never a sinner. (The law came through Moses, not Jesus. Jesus did not abolish the law because it's holy in itself, see point 1, but He came to fulfill it by making us Holy by Repentance from sinful nature which cannot obey it see point 2)
Sinners = The Law of Moses = The Mark of the Beast = Bad Fruit = No Faith
Holy = Jesus Christ (The Holy Spirit) = The Seal of God = Good Fruit = Faith
Romans 6:15-16 "Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living."
Psalm 40:6-8
"You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand—you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings.
Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures:
I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written ON MY HEART.”
a Heart needs to Repent to receive them, but an evil, unrepented heart only breaks them
The Seal of God
God "marks" (puts a "seal" on) all His chosen to be redeemed when they Repent and receive the Holy Spirit; that seal requires FAITH.
John 6:27
"But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.”
God wants people to be free from making monetary profits for sustenance; He is the provider, but it takes Faith to believe that He will provide; that is why Jesus tells us to give up our money to the poor and follow Him! It's letting go of control and relying on Him; it's leaving Egypt, slavery to money, and refusing the mark of the beast! Since my repentance - I have not gone one day to "earn" money, but I have everything I need! I only work for God's Kingdom. He is my boss, and He supplies my needs! It's incredibly freeing! How does this provision happen? Through miracles and unexpected events that would never happen otherwise (if I was the one in control). All I need to do is have Faith and trust that He is Almighty God who will never leave or forsake me. Everything belongs to Him! Each time I receive a gift, I know it's from God! My joy spills over, and I'm incredibly thankful! Nothing is more satisfying than serving Him! It's hard not to praise Him!
1 Corinthians 9:7-8 "What soldier has to pay his own expenses? What farmer plants a vineyard and doesn’t have the right to eat some of its fruit? What shepherd cares for a flock of sheep and isn’t allowed to drink some of the milk? Am I expressing merely a human opinion, or does the law say the same thing?"
2 Timothy 2:4-7 "Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Soldiers don’t get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them. And athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules. And hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor. Think about what I am saying. The Lord will help you understand all these things."
(I'm not speaking about donations - I never got any, and I don't rely on them; it's a setup to test the generosity and faith of others; that's how ministry works. I don't charge fees because I don't do it for money; I'm free from it. I will not give details of "how" exactly God supports me because I don't want anyone to expect it the same way; that would be a lack of Faith.)
2 Corinthians 1:21-22 (NLV)
"God is the One Who makes our faith and your faith strong in Christ. He has set us apart for Himself. He has put His mark on us to show we belong to Him. HIS HOLY SPIRIT IS IN OUR HEARTS TO PROVE THIS."
Ephesians 1:13-14
"And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him."
meaning; serving Him and expanding His Kingdom; our earthy ambitions die together with sinful nature
1 John 5:18
"We know that God’s children do not make a practice of sinning, for God’s Son holds them securely, and THE EVIL ONE CANNOT TOUCH THEM."
Ezekiel 9:4-7
“He said to him, “Walk through the streets of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of all who weep and sigh because of the detestable sins being committed in their city.”
Then I heard the Lord say to the other men, “Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all—old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin right here at the Temple.” So they began by killing the seventy leaders. “Defile the Temple!” the Lord commanded. “Fill its courtyards with corpses. Go!” So they went and began killing throughout the city.”
Ezekiel 9:11 “Then the man in linen clothing, who carried the writer’s case, reported back and said, “I have done as you commanded.”
This is a prophecy of the End Times; the "Mark" in this context refers to the "Seal of God." The Temple mentioned is the 3rd Temple. Learn more here.
An extra thought:
Many think that the cross will be the "mark of the beast." You're free to think whatever you want. As I explained, Faith is Spiritual, not physical. This is the difference between people who repent and those who don't. The latter only believe what they can see, and they practice their beliefs in a physical way or not at all.
The motion of the cross involves the right hand and a forehead and is NOT biblical.
Bowing to the Cross is NOT biblical.
Wearing the Cross is NOT biblical (it's an idol).
"The Cross" is where you should crucify your sinful nature - circumcise your heart! In a spiritual sense!
Not practicing in this false way doesn't mean that someone is saved. They are not saved if they do not repent!
Bowing to the Lord is done in SPIRIT!
Jesus Christ is NOT on the Cross! He is in the Spirit, and He is ALIVE!
John 4:21-24
"Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews. But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
Luke 17:28-30
“And the world will be as it was in the days of Lot. People went about their daily business—eating and drinking, BUYING AND SELLING, farming and building—until the morning Lot left Sodom. Then fire and burning sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. Yes, it will be ‘BUSINESS AS USUAL’ right up to the day when the Son of Man is revealed."
